noun Etymology: New Latin, from Latin suspendere Date: 1832 a suspending part or structure: as a. a group or chain of cells that is produced from the zygote of a seed plant and serves to push the developing embryo into the endosperm b. either of a pair of gametangia-bearing hyphal outgrowths in fungi (order Mucorales) that extend from two sexually compatible hyphae and support the resulting zygospore
