or German Pfalz geographical name either of two districts SW Germany once ruled by counts palatine of the Holy Roman Empire: Rhenish Palatinate (on the Rhine E of Saarland) & Upper Palatinate (on the Danube around Regensburg) — see Rhineland-Palatinate
